Shredder Options

Size

Do you need a small, easy to store desktop shredder or something much more substantial and heavy duty, like a floor-standing shredder with wheels?

Cut

You may also want to consider the type of cut. Remember, cross cut shredding offers a higher level of security, however a regular strip cut offers a good level of shredding for basic use.

Shredded piece size

The size of shredded pieces should also be considered, as the smaller the piece, the higher the level of security it is considered to give. The smaller the piece, the more pieces are produced from a single sheet, which in turn makes it harder for anyone to piece back together.

Basket or bin size

This is the size of the storage compartment that holds the shredded material. The size is generally measured in a litre capacity.

Media

Many modern shredders can shred other items, such as staples, credit cards, CDs, memory sticks and even hard drives.

Strip Cut Shredders

Strip cut shredders or ribbon-cut shredders, shred documents in to a long and thin shape. They tend to cut paper in widths of 2mm up to 12mm, dependent on brand and model number. Strip cut shredding tends to be quicker than cross-cutting, as it only requires single one-way cuts, as opposed to 2 cuts for cross-shredding.

Strip Cut Shredders

Cross Cut Shredders

Although running generally slower in comparison to a strip cut shredder in the same class, cross cut shredding is considered to be more secure, due to the additional cuts undertaken. The other main benefit of cross cut shredding is that the waste produced takes up less space in the bin compared to strip shredding. The sizes of the finished pieces tend to be between 1mm x 5mm to 10mm x 80mm.

DIN P-1

Low security

DIN level 1 shredders. Whilst we wouldn’t recommend this for the shredding of important documents that contain bank account information and other important details, DIN level 1 is fine for general home use shredding. At this rating, your paper will likely be shred into approximately 40 strips. The finished strip size will be around 12mm wide.

DIN P-4

Medium to high security

DDIN level 4 shredders. The level of shredding offers a very high level of security. To make the grade, all machines must cross-cut shred documents into pieces no bigger than 2mm x 15mm. Also known as “micro cutting” or “micro-cut”, DIN level 4 shredding is suitable for shredding very important company documents which could be considered dangerous if they were to fall into the wrong hands.

DIN level 5 shredders. This level of shredding is on the high end of the scale and is used by the military and government to shred documents where, potentially, lives could be at stake and put national security under threat. Cross-cut particles need to be under .8mm x 12mm to make this grade.

For both personal and business use, shredders are a great way of combatting general fraud and identity fraud. Fraudsters won’t think twice about trawling through your waste bin, looking for your discarded personal documents, hoping for a little jackpot win.

It is crucial that any private documents are disposed of efficiently in order to protect yourself, your business and your customers details. To ensure your new shredder meets your needs, you need to answer the following base questions:

There are a lot of different types of shredder, some more suitable for certain environments than others. Consider how many people will be using the shredder and how many documents will be passed through the shredder on a daily or weekly basis.

How many sheets will be fed through the shredder in a single pass? This is known as sheet capacity and larger capacity allows for larger piles of documents to be shredded at once.

Will the shredder be used for excessive periods in one go? If so, you need to think about the cool down period requirement of the machine, as the machine may not be suitable for prolonged use or need to stop functioning in order to cool itself down and ensure it will still operate efficiently the next time you need to shred documents. If you’re an infrequent shredder, this won’t really be an issue for you.

The security of the shredder you require totally depends on how sensitive the documents and media are that you wish to shred. Remember, the smaller the shredded pieces, higher the DIN level will be. Our guide above, shows the various DIN security levels and what they mean, will help you make the right choice for your needs.

Once you know the base level of shredder that meets your security and usage needs, you can then look into extra features that will make your life a little easier.

Paper jam

Paper jams can occur when you overload or overuse your shredder. Certain models of shredder have features built in that help to reduce the number of jams and even eliminate a paper jam before it happens.

Safety

A very important feature, if you ask us, is safety and injury prevention. Our shredders offer simple safety lock features through to more advanced options such as sensors that can detect hands and fingers and force the machine to stop if fingers come into contact with the paper opening.

Energy saving

Play your part in energy conservation and also save money on your electric bills with auto shut-off and low energy consumption models. Auto shut-off models power off after a specified time of inactivity and will power up again when you come back to use the machine. Energy saving models tend to use much less energy through the day.

More useful features

There are a great deal more features available to you when it comes to your shredder. Consider Silent Shred technology for a quieter machine or auto oil to make for less maintenance and helps to extend the life of the shredder.

Other materials to shred

Many people find that they only need to shred paper. However, you may have a need to shred other materials and media. Consider a model that will shred staples or paperclips, for those of us who don’t have time to unpick them from documents. Perhaps you need to shred expired debit and credit cards or CDs, we have models to cover this too.
